What does a missionary do?
For our intents and purposes, a missionary is someone who leaves the place they are from to purposely go and tell others about Jesus. This doesn’t always have to be overseas, but is usually to ‘unreached people groups'(a people group within which there is no indigenous community of believing Christians able to evangelise this people group*.) This can look like outright evangelising (teaching and preaching), however Tom would like to work with local peoples through discipling them to be able to evangelise to their own people, and supporting the local church. Patty would like to use her educational degree to support the local community and create relationships which will lead to facilitating gospel conversations. This looks different from team to team, country to country. Our organistion has a specific focus on planting churches.
Why our specific organisation?
It all started with Spuddy 🙂 Tom met Spuddy, a mobiliser and mentor for our organisation, while he was at college, and fell in love with it.
For Tom, he likes that they are team based and focused on reaching the unreached. Everything is a conversation and they’re very loving people, which you can see in everything they do.
For Patty, she likes their pioneering attitude. At the heart of the organisation is getting out amongst people and trying new things. While there needs to be wisdom and discernment, we are the sort of people who like to get our boots on the ground and go.
How do you get paid?Â
Support raising! Through different churches and individuals, we put together a group of sponsors who promise to donate to us a certain amount over a certain period of time. When I was a uni student, I used to support a few missionaries for $10 each month.
For Patty, this might also look like getting paid (or partially paid) work as a teacher.
What are you going to do with the dogs?
The plan is to bring Luna (pictured in the header) with us. She’s pretty sturdy, and got a lot of life left in her. As for Annie, at this point in life, she will probably not be with us when we start mission work 😔
Feel free to send through any more questions you think of!
